Mission Statement

Our mission at Celebrating Roots is to provide holistic developmental support that empowers youth and families from marginalized communities through culturally responsive programming & services.

WHO WE ARE

Established in 2014, Celebrating Roots is a nonprofit founded and led by first generation refugee and immigrant women from East Africa.

WHO WE SERVE

We are dedicated to empowering young people and their families, specifically BIPOC youth from low-income refugee and immigrant households.

GETTING INVOLVED

Whether you are a student or a volunteer, our organization offers a range of opportunities for you to get involved and make a difference.

Celebrating Roots is a youth development 501(c)(3) committed to shifting power to diaspora youth by dismantling the barriers that have historically excluded them from essential services, leadership spaces, and decision-making.

A 2016 study by the UW School of Public Health revealed that many East African families were hesitant to engage with programs due to a perceived disconnect from their cultural needs. Celebrating Roots was created in response to close that gap. Our team, made up of individuals who reflect and come from the communities we serve, draws on deep cultural and linguistic understanding to foster trust and build meaningful connections, while co-creating culturally meaningful ways for young people and families to participate in and shape their futures.

We are not just a service provider; we are a trusted ally and advocate for our youth and their families.
